Why are Handmade clothes expensive?

To understand why handmade products including apparel are priced at a point higher than machine-produced items available in bulk, it is important to take a look at what are the different things that amount to the price of any product.

Typically what makes up the final price of any product are the various steps involved in making the product including sourcing raw materials, manufacturing, shipping, and so on. When it comes to handmade items, each individual item requires effort and time for the artisans to craft them with care. The fine output of an item crafted by hand is unparalleled and cannot be compared to bulk-produced fast fashion products. The steps involved in making products by hand are also then more nuanced than other items.

  1. Time spent making it
Artisan-made apparel requires a certain amount of mastery of a skill. Often, these skills have been passed down generationally, and serve as a preservation of cultural heritage and knowledge that would be lost without a demand for makers’ handmade creations.  Each individual handmade item is created with the skilled use of hands, tools, and machinery, materials are brought together to create the final product.  In many cases, the raw materials are created by the artisans themselves.

  1. Raw materials that went into its production
Handmade products are also naturally more environmentally sustainable than products that are made purely mechanically, as they require less energy and resources during the manufacturing process. These resources are often ethically sourced or produced ensuring a minimal carbon footprint but a long time in the production cycle. Though it may take longer, it lasts longer ensuring a smaller footprint and less waste accumulating in landfills.

  1. Overheads (equipment, insurance utilities, and so on):

The cost of production of handmade products cannot be compared to machine-made goods that involve any kind of work by hand as the conditions in which ethical handmade items are produced are very different from sweatshops with harmful working conditions.

Thus pricing for handmade items bears the weight of ensuring it nurtures an entirely ethical supply chain right from the raw materials to the delivery of the final product to you. The more mindful purchases you make the stronger the ecosystem for conscious production gets, which is better for the environment and for the people.
